ST JOHN'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, NORTON SUMMIT

Vision: “To be a vital expression of God’s presence in the Adelaide Hills.”

St John's Church is in the Adelaide Hills, about 20 minutes east of the city. Head east along Magill Road, vere right onto Old Norton Summit Road and then turn left at the Norton Summit Scenic Hotel. St John's Road is then immediately to the right, with the church and hall set back just off the road. The historic church building was established on land donated by the Honourable John Baker, who was Premier of South Australia in 1857. The church building was operational in 1872, and consecrated on New Year’s Day 1873 by the first Bishop of Adelaide, Augustus Short. The building is beautifully crafted from hills sandstone. The traceried windows and stepped buttresses help impart the feeling of an English village church, watching gracefully over Third Creek Valley, and the city below.St John’s is entrenched with a rich history, including an association with Marble Hill, which was the South Australian Vice-Regal summer residence. Historically, St John's Church enjoyed the title of being the Vice-Regal chapel for many years. In 1997, a large restoration project was undertaken during the church's 125th Anniversary year. With all the charm of yesteryear, St John's Anglican Church remains a vital centre of Anglican worship and community at Norton Summit in the Adelaide Hills.

St John's church is one of the friendliest places you'll find, and its hospitality unsurpassed. The worship is a vital expression of sacramental faith with an interesting mix of informality in a relaxed atmosphere. Contemporary and genuine exploration of faith and cutting edge theology is accepted and encouraged within a strongly accepting and inclusive community. Our under-seat heating system will keep you warm on those brisk 'Adelaide hill's mornings' during winter. Whether you're looking for a church to call home, or asking deep and meaningful questions about life, or are in need of a caring community, or simply desire a very beautiful place to sit and contemplate life to give you respite from the world, visit St John's at Norton Summit.

A complete range of pastoral services is available to the wider community including baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

Weddings. St John's is a popular church for weddings, which are conducted by arrangement with the Parish Priest who will guide you through the process. To inspect the church, call in to one of our Sunday services to see if it's suitable. In most cases, a few months notice of an intended marriage is desirable, and a minimum of one month is a legal requirement. Our seating capacity is about 100, but a few more can normally be squeezed in (about 120). We welcome your inquiry, and trust the history of the church, coupled with scenic views, the convenient location, and a friendly community atmosphere will contribute to making your wedding a memorable occasion. A brochure outlining process and pricing is available on request.

The parish hall is available for hire.

The Parish Priest is the Reverend Tim Sherwell.
